についてChefchaouen

Chefchaouen — the Blue Pearl of Morocco — is a small mountain town of 45,000 people in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, 560 km from Marrakech. Founded in 1471 as a fortress to resist Portuguese incursions, the town developed a distinctive culture blending Andalusian Moorish traditions with indigenous Berber customs. In the 1930s, Jewish residents began painting the town's walls in various shades of blue — a tradition maintained ever since that has made Chefchaouen one of the most photographed towns in the world.

The medina is compact and relatively easy to navigate compared to Fes or Marrakech, making it one of Morocco's most visitor-friendly historic cities. The main square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam, is dominated by a 15th-century kasbah and a Grand Mosque with an unusual octagonal minaret. Above the town, the Ras El Ma waterfall provides a natural swimming spot and picnic area, while the Spanish Mosque on the hilltop above offers the best panoramic views of the blue city and surrounding mountains.

Chefchaouen is typically combined with Fes in a northern Morocco itinerary. KechGo can arrange a private transfer as part of a multi-day Morocco circuit: Marrakech → Fes → Chefchaouen is a classic route. The full journey from Marrakech to Chefchaouen is approximately 8 hours via the A2 and N2 highways.

の旅のヒントChefchaouen

  • The blue streets are at their most photogenic in the early morning (6–8am) before stall owners set up and before other tourists arrive
  • The hike to the Spanish Mosque takes around 30 minutes each way and the view of the blue city against the Rif Mountains is exceptional
  • Chefchaouen is known for its handwoven wool blankets — some of the most authentic Moroccan textiles are made and sold here
  • The town is at 600 metres altitude in the mountains — noticeably cooler than the coast; bring layers year-round
  • Most visitors combine Chefchaouen with Fes — spend 2 nights in Fes and 2 nights in Chefchaouen for a well-paced northern Morocco itinerary

How far is Chefchaouen from Marrakech?

Chefchaouen is approximately 560 km from Marrakech, about an 8-hour drive via the A2 motorway and Fes.

Why is Chefchaouen so blue?

The blue paint tradition is attributed to the town's Jewish community in the 1930s, who painted the buildings blue to symbolise the sky and heaven. The practice was maintained and expanded by subsequent residents and is now a defining feature of the city's identity.

Yes, but due to the distance (8 hours), Chefchaouen is best visited as part of a multi-day northern Morocco itinerary combined with Fes. KechGo can arrange the full circuit with flexible stops.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the best weather — mild temperatures and clear skies. Summer is warm but can be crowded. Winter brings cool temperatures and occasional snow on the Rif Mountains.

How do I get from Marrakech to Chefchaouen?

KechGo provides private transfers from Marrakech to Chefchaouen from €400. Given the distance, we recommend building the journey over 2 days with a stop in Meknes, Fes, or Volubilis.
