Informazioni suAït Ben Haddou
Aït Ben Haddou is a fortified earthen village (ksar) on the ancient caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, 195 km southeast of the city via the Tichka Pass. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, the ksar is considered the finest surviving example of southern Moroccan mud-brick (pisé) architecture — a maze of interconnected houses, granaries, towers, and mosques rising on a rocky outcrop above the Ounila River. The sight of the village glowing red at sunrise or sunset is among the most photographed images in Morocco.
The village is also one of the most filmed locations in the world. Its ancient architecture has stood in for the slave city Yunkai in Game of Thrones, Jerusalem in Jesus of Nazareth, and countless other historical epics. Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and Babel also used Aït Ben Haddou for key scenes. A small permanent community of families continues to live in the ksar; the rest of the village has been carefully restored and maintained for tourism and film.
Aït Ben Haddou is most commonly visited as a stop on the way to or from Ouarzazate (30 km east). KechGo can arrange a combined day trip from Marrakech covering both sites, or include Aït Ben Haddou as a stop on a longer Sahara journey.
