The medina of Fes el-Bali is a sensory maze of 9,400 streets and alleys, each dedicated to a specific craft or trade. The Chouara Tannery, where leather has been dyed using centuries-old natural methods since the 11th century, is the city's most iconic sight — best viewed from the surrounding terraces of the leather merchants above. The Bou Inania Madrasa, the al-Attarine Madrasa, and the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts represent the pinnacle of Islamic architectural decoration in Morocco.
